THE HIERARCHY OF ORGAN SYSTEMS: AN IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS OF THE ORGAN LAYERS

LAYER 1: THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

I cannot emphasise strongly enough the impact of a balanced endocrine system on overall health throughout the body. Hormonal balance affects all organs and organ systems directly or indirectly.

Today, due to the widespread use of synthetic hormones the majority of women suffer from serious disruption to the endocrine system. Sometimes it can seem that these are hereditary disorders because the complaint can be seen in the previous generation (e.g. eczema or menstrual problems). This is misleading; the complaints are due to an inherited hormonal imbalance caused initially by the use of synthetic hormones in the mother.

In my practice only around 20% of male patients show signs of endocrine disruption as they are far less exposed to synthetic hormones, whereas the majority of women I see have imbalances in this area. 95% of patients with thyroid problems are women due to the use of the pill, morning after pill and so forth. Menopausal problems in women that hardly existed years ago can also be attributed to this, as can rising rates of breast cancer. Effects from synthetic hormones can be insidious, so always be sure to look for it in your patients’ timelines as it can cause widespread chronic damage.

Sex drive

Hormones such as oxytocin, dopamine and adrenaline play an important role in sexuality. These hormones can give a sense of extreme happiness and well being. The desire to constantly recapture these feelings can lead to addictions in the sexual arena, which in turn may lead to promiscuity. An endocrine imbalance can also completely inhibit libido leading to a total lack of interest in sex. The hormonal system must be in balance for a healthy regulation of sexual desires.

Conception and childbirth

At the merging of the seed and the egg, oxytocin, progesterone, testosterone, and oestrogen all play a major role. In the first eight weeks after conception it is of utmost importance that the hormones are in balance and that the mother is 100% receptive to the pregnancy.

Many miscarriages are caused by an imbalance in the female hormones, often caused initially by contraceptives. It is advisable to bring the hormonal system into balance before pregnancy using a Poly Contraceptive course. One might also consider a course of Progesterone, Folliculinum, or Oestrogen, depending on which hormones are shown to be out of balance in blood tests.

In the case of miscarriage always think of Secale in high potency for a quick recovery. It is an important remedy after one or more miscarriages and/or abortions to support the mental/emotional level. The theme of Secale is denial and unprocessed emotions of loss.

Birth has become highly medicalized. Often babies are born by planned C-Section or induction ahead of their natural due date. In the last two weeks of pregnancy the survival instinct develops; self-reliance, the instinct to suck and the fighting spirit to be in this world. Taking a child early from the womb can affect these instincts leading to problems in the newborn. It takes away the child’s right to be born when they are ready.

Vacuum delivery and vaccinations during pregnancy are standard in many countries across the world. These medical interventions during this important final stage of foetal development cause the child to enter this world with a lack of self-reliance.
A loving sexual relationship is important for the attachment of and with the child. If labour does not start around the due date, sex (with ejaculation) may help due to the prostaglandins in the sperm as well as the release of oxytocin in the mother, which may spark contractions. Natural oxytocin in the blood will increase feelings of well-being in the baby and I believe it also gives more bonding with the father if there are feelings of love between the parents at this important time.

The first year of life is important for neurodevelopment and hormones play a large role in the development of the brain. Oxytocin is vital for attachment and successful breastfeeding. The neurotransmitter dopamine must also be in balance for a sense of calm and safety. Too many stress hormones during the birth can greatly affect the sense of calm in the newborn, so be sure to enquire in detail about the birth itself.

Transitional phase  (male and female menopause)

The end of the fertile period for women is controlled by the endocrine system. Women’s menstruation usually stops between the ages of 47 and 52, with accompanying hormonal changes. If there is no history of synthetic hormones and a good diet has been maintained, this ‘change of life’ can happen smoothly without difficult symptoms. Unfortunately this is rarely ever the case today. Instead, women have an array of menopausal problems; hot flushes, heavy bleeding, hair loss, myomas, polyps, fibroids and so on. A Poly Contraceptive course can be so useful in these cases and also think of remedies such as Oestrogen, Sepia, Graphites, Phosphorous or Medorrhinum, depending on the details of the case.

Men also experience a ‘change’ around the age of 47. We can see a reduction in testosterone levels, decreased libido, impotence, erectile dysfunction, prostate enlargement (with difficulties urinating), increased PSA and sometimes prostate cancer. If men have a lot of problems in this area, you might think of a potentially high exposure to soft plastics (Bisphenol A) or other oestrogen mimickers. They cause an imbalance in the hormonal system and can lead to a suppression of masculinity.

Breast cancer and hormonal contraceptives

The use of hormonal contraceptives greatly increases a woman’s risk of breast cancer. Whilst this is not denied by mainstream medicine, the degree of risk is hugely underplayed. Women between 25 and 49 now suffer twice as many cancers than men, with breast cancer making up most of this difference.

In cases of breast cancer with a history of oral contraceptives I almost always start with the Poly Contraceptive course. If the presenting complaints are very hormonally driven I prescribe remedies with affinity for the endocrine system, such as Sepia, Lac Maternum, Phytolacca, Asterias Rubens, Thuja, Medorrhinum, Syphilinum and Tuberculinum.

Abortions

The morning after pill contains a quantity of hormones equal to 10 days’ worth of contraceptive pills. Taken in one go, it can be extremely disruptive to health. Most women don’t think of it as harmful, so again, educating your patients about the effects is advisable.

Abortion pills can be prescribed up to 9 weeks into the pregnancy. It involves two drugs: one to block progesterone (mifepristone), and a second (misoprostol) to stimulate the uterus to expel the pregnancy. I advise women that it is better to have a medical termination rather than taking these drugs. I make sure the patient knows all possible options so that she can make a well-informed decision. Then I support her homeopathically with whatever choice is made.

Treatment of hormonal imbalance

The Poly Contraceptive course is a fantastic tool in rebalancing the endocrine after synthetic hormone exposure. It is one of the most commonly prescribed courses in my practice.

If a woman falls pregnant whilst taking the pill, I directly advise a Poly Contraceptive course during the pregnancy, but I tend to wait until after the third month of pregnancy before giving the 10MK potency. After this course, very often most of the complaints the woman came with are solved.

Balancing the endocrine system allows people to age more gently with fewer symptoms associated with this time of life. Bone infections, osteoporosis, thyroid problems and joint problems are often hormone-related, so can be helped greatly by balancing this system. Even where there has been a long period of time between the initial disturbance in the endocrine system and the day they come to see you, recovery is still possible.  …
